Nicotine Products

Patients who smoke, use tobacco products or nicotine products like the patch, gum or nasal sprays are at a greater risk for significant surgical complications of skin dying and delayed healing. Individuals exposed to second-hand smoke are also at potential risk for similar complications attributable to nicotine exposure. Additionally, smokers may experience more negative effects of anesthesia including coughing and the possibly of increased bleeding. Individuals who do not use tobacco or nicotine-containing are significantly less prone to these types of complications. Patients should refrain from smoking for at least six weeks before surgery.
