Implant Pain

All patients experience some pain after surgery. Pain of varying intensity and duration may occur and persist after breast implant surgery. The placement of a breast implant in the pocket beneath the pectoralis muscle causes more pain than an implant placed beneath the breast tissue and over the muscle. Pain may also be the result of improper implant size, poor implant placement, certain surgical techniques, capsular contracture or sensory nerve entrapment, or injury. Chronic pain, or pain that lasts longer than six months, may occur from nerves trapped in scar tissue or due to tissue stretching. If a patient experiences significant pain or if pain persists, the surgeon must be contacted.
